On Natural Birth...
The real question about safety is not whether you want a pleasant birth at home or a safe birth in the hospital ? It is, “Do you want to give birth at home and run the miniscule risk of an emergency that might (but not necessarily would) be handled better in the hospital, or do you want to give birth in the hospital and run the considerably increased risk of infection, the certainty of additional stress, and the near certainty of having unnecessary (and potentially risky interventions?”) ~ Henri Goer

Members of the home birth movement have chosen their alternative form of care not through faulty understanding of medical principles, but as a result of active and reasoned disagreement with them. ~ Bonnie O’Connor

BIRTHING: The Thread That Weaves Us All Together

Heather, birthing Daisy Jade 2-7-07

Once I realized it was the energy and power of birth that scared me, not pain, I was able to relax into the process and open up with every contraction. The power of birth is so magnificent and beautiful. Today this power, this beauty, this love, from my birth experience walks with me where ever I go and will be with me forever. ~ Heather, birthing Daisy Jade 2-7-07

Shoko

At the moment when the head was out, it was the best feeling, even more than orgasm.  The baby's body was still inside of me and then his warm soft body came out. It was smooth and warm. So wonderful. Even though it has been 8 months, I remember that feeling every day. ~ Shoko

Our homebirth became not only about building a family, but also about building community.  My husband was the first person to hold our daughter.  He then laid her on me and she stopped crying and started breastfeeding. We were filled with joy.  There was no fear.  Our baby’s birth was smooth like a river running its natural course to the sea. ~ Gigi

Just one day...One moment...One breath and your in this world.  After all the work one giant push brought you into my hands.  Yes, aaah it feels so good.  On my belly still connected. ~ Jennifer

There was my midwife holding my hand and looking deep into my eyes.  As I looked into hers, I began to feel better.  She was sending me energy and I could begin to feel once again the connection to the earth and to all of the birthing women before me.  I knew that I was a woman and that all people on this earth for all of time had been born from women.  Without birth there would be no life.  I felt the strength of all those women coming through my midwife’s eyes and knew that I could do it. ~ Meredith

Return to Natural Childbirth.  Aloha Kakou…This is a time when we begin to connect more deeply with the ways of our people before us. This is the time when we begin to remember that every aspect of living was done in a manner of natural interaction with all that was outside and all that was inside.  We heal from old wounds as we relearn our songs and our dances, our rituals and our practices, our traditions and ceremonies of breathing new life into an old world. ~ Pua Case, wife and mother of two daughters, teacher of Hawaiian Cultural Practices, Hula and teacher in a Conversion Charter School

In my mind I can see you teaching me how to birth; how to be brave, understand my fears, accept the pain and relish in the joy of a natural birth. ~ Debra

The home birth is a family event surrounded with love and nurturing.  The mother is treated as royalty, is in a natural state, without the use of drugs.  There is soothing massages, warm towels and bath, fragrant flowers and soft music and lighting.  There is only positive energy in the home.  I speak of this, since this is what I had in my home for my daughter’s birth.  The highly respected midwife is the link between God and woman.  She serves as the medium to bring in new life.  I believe that the beauty of a nurturing home birth can build stronger and more resilient children of the future. ~ Puna Kihoi, Community Facilitator/Ocean Voyager
